Check if you or your child has coronavirus symptoms

If you have any of the main symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), get a test as soon as possible. Stay at home until you get the result.

Main symptoms

The main symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
  • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

Most people with coronavirus have at least 1 of these symptoms.

What to do if you have symptoms

If you have any of the main symptoms of coronavirus:

  1. Get a test to check if you have coronavirus as soon as possible.
  2. Stay at home and do not have visitors until you get your test result – only leave your home to have a test.

Anyone you live with, and anyone in your support bubble, must also stay at home until you get your result.

11/09/2020

Dear Parents/carers,

It has been so wonderful to have all the children back in school this week.  They all seem very happy to be back with us, it has been lovely to witness their joy as they greet friends and settle back into school life. There is much that feels familiar, but we are not quite back to normal yet.  We have had to adapt how we are managing a number of things in school, in order to keep our school as safe as possible.  One example, we are delivering online assemblies in each classroom, as the children get used to remaining in their ‘bubbles’.  Our Chaplaincy team has been able to deliver an online liturgy to KS2 classes on the theme of 'Falling Out’ and how we can avoid this.   Our year usually begins with our St Bernard’s Mass for the whole school, however this year, Year 6 attended on Friday and Fr Cosmas gave permission for the Mass to be videoed to show the rest of the KS2 children.

Year 5 and Year 6 have enjoyed their PE at Shirehampton Cricket Club this week, and Year 3 and Year 4 are very much looking forward to the first session of Forest School next week, Year 3 go on Tuesday and Year 4 on Thursday, please remember to return permission slips for this if you have not done so already.

We have welcomed our new Reception class to St Bernard’s this week, they are attending in smaller groups to start with, staying for lunch next week and will be with us full time the following week. Miss Scaplehorn and the Reception team are really pleased with how well they have settled already.

School Dinners

We are moving to Stage 2 of Chartwells phased return to providing hot school meals in schools.  From next week there will be a hot school meal choice on a Monday and Thursday, along with the cold ham or cheese sandwich choice.  We aim to increase this to 4 days of hot school meal choices by the end of this Term, with full hot school meals menu in place in Term 2.

Lunch on a Friday. Going forwards, please can only Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 bring / order a packed lunch. KS2 (year 3 upwards) children are asked to have lunch at home on a Friday.

Another tweak we would like to make, is to the drop off and pick up arrangements for Year 6 children.

We are concerned that there are a large number of parents gathering at the gate in main playground at these times. To try to reduce this congestion, as we unfortunately only have one gate, we would ask Year 6 children to enter and exit school via the KS1 side gate by the office and enter through the Fire Exit door and walk up to their Y6 classroom and exit the same way at the end of day at their staggered times.

We would remind parents that the social network site TikTok requires that users be at least 13 years old. It is not an appropriate site for primary school aged children, unfortunately, we have had reports of highly upsetting videos being viewed by some Bristol primary school children.

Messaging through Dojo. Please be aware that we are swapping back to our pre-lockdown use of Class Dojo. It is no longer the method of communication for parents and carers to get in touch with teachers. On occasions a teacher might dojo message you, please respond if they do. Dojo is primarily used for reminders around PE kits, communicating class events, news and celebrations and individual children’s achievements (sent as personal messages). If you have any inquiries regarding your child, please revert to the normal avenues of contacting the school office to arrange a phone appointment with a teacher.

Please can we ask that school reading books and reading records stay at home Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, which may mean that there is no need to bring in the school book bag at all on these days. On Monday please bring your school book bag into school for new books, and on Friday please return the books, for the required 48-hour quarantine of the books, before they are redistributed.  Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.

Please continue to stay safe and healthy, we are continuing to do as much as we can at St Bernard’s to ensure the school is as safe as we can make it in these difficult times.

Yours Sincerely,

Mrs Wilson and Mr Jordan

SYMPTOMS OF COVID 19

Symptoms of Covid 19 are a new and continuous cough, a fever or temperature and/ or a loss of sense of smell and taste; there are also reports of rare cases where children have initially presented with gastrointestinal problems. Do not send your child to school if they display any of these symptoms: symptoms in children are often mild.

Please see the below link for details of symptoms, isolation and testing. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/

Please be assured that we have taken every action possible to ensure that we are keeping children and staff safe.  Our September Opening Covid Risk Assessment is available on our website if you would like further information.

Can I take this opportunity to thank you for your support through this very difficult time, the staff at St Bernard’s are excited and ready for the challenge of the new school year.  Once we have welcomed the children back, we will implement our planned recovery curriculum over the coming weeks.  This will enable us to assess the children and identify any catch-up support needed to ensure children get back on track quickly.

We will be in touch about this in the coming weeks.

We look forward to seeing more of our parents/carers from Monday 7th.

Best wishes,

Mrs Wilson and Mr Jordan
